Can Zoho Books keep statutory accounting books in Vietnam?

Updated: 1 day ago
Many businesses in Vietnam already run on Zoho CRM yet still keep a separate accounting package, because they believe Zoho Books can only produce internal reports, not the books and tax reports Vietnamese forms require.
Optimus tested a full accounting quarter of a sample company on Zoho Books.
I. THE SHORT ANSWER

Out of the box: Books only produces international-style reports, which suit internal management.
With 3 components: in our test run, Books with the setup and the reporting tool produced the ledgers, financial statements (without the notes, FX revaluation and other items in section VII) and VAT return figures in Vietnamese formats. E-invoicing is designed but not yet built.
II. THE THREE COMPONENTS

Accountants keep entering daily transactions in Books as usual. The three components handle the Vietnamese requirements.
III. COMPONENT 1: SET UP BOOKS FOR VIETNAMESE STANDARDS
A coded chart of accounts. Every account, including Books' system accounts, is named and coded under Circular 133 (small and medium-sized businesses) or Circular 99 (which replaced Circular 200 in 2026). Optimus added a few sub-account codes, such as 1118 and 1389.

All VAT rates. Output and input VAT post to separate accounts. The reduced 8% rate applies only to eligible items until 31 December 2026; the accountant assigns the correct rate to each item.

Invoices with e-invoice number fields. Invoices carry fields such as the e-invoice series and number, ready for a later connection to an e-invoice provider. The PDF that Books prints is not a legal e-invoice.

IV. COMPONENT 2: A TOOL THAT EXPORTS THE BOOKS AND REPORTS
Books has a built-in Journal report holding every debit and credit by account code. A reporting tool built by Optimus reads it through the API and fills in each form. The VAT return figures follow form 01/GTGT under Circular 89/2026.

Example: Q3/2026 for a sample company. The company sells goods and services and has 29 transactions in the quarter: capital contribution, purchases, an asset purchase, sales, a customer return, a USD invoice, payroll and depreciation.
Each run, the tool cross-checks the figures: debits equal credits and the numbers agree across reports. On the sample data, all 10 checks passed. This is an internal check; it does not replace the accountant's review or an audit.
V. WHERE BOOKS DIFFERS FROM VIETNAMESE PRACTICE
Because Books is built for many countries, it records a few transactions differently from Vietnamese practice. For example, enter every purchase invoice as a Bill, or its input VAT will be missing from the VAT return.

VI. COMPONENT 3: E-INVOICING
Books cannot issue valid e-invoices in Vietnam on its own, so it needs to connect to an e-invoice provider through an API; the provider charges its own fees. The flow below is a design Optimus proposes and has not yet put into production:

VII. POINTS TO WATCH WHEN DEPLOYING
Cost of sales and inventory: wait until Books finishes computing cost of sales before running reports. Books offers only first in, first out and moving weighted average. A business using another method, such as periodic weighted average, would have to change its accounting policy; the chief accountant should decide before committing to Books.
Official books: lock the period in Books before exporting the ledgers. Use them as the official ledgers only once the chief accountant confirms they comply with the Law on Accounting and the Ministry of Finance's forms.
Moving from old software: enter all opening balances and reconcile each account with the old software. If the Books plan has no fixed asset module, keep the fixed asset register separately.
Not covered by the 3 components: notes to the financial statements, foreign currency revaluation, filing returns on the tax portal, tax returns other than VAT, annual tax finalization, and receipt and payment voucher templates.
VIII. ROADMAP TO GO LIVE

CONCLUSION
For the sample company, Books with the Vietnamese setup and the reporting tool produced the ledgers and financial statements, without the notes, FX revaluation and other items in section VII. E-invoicing still needs an integration.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does it require programming?
Yes, for the reporting tool and the e-invoice integration, which Optimus can build and maintain. The Books setup needs no code.
Can Zoho Analytics produce the Vietnamese report forms?
Optimus has not tested this approach.
